This is an exciting opportunity in Galesburg, Michigan for a Vehicle Systems Engineer - Eaton Cummins Automated Transmission Technologies is where you can work on industry leading engineering projects.

This position is part of the vehicle systems Product Performance and Calibration group. As a member of this team, you will be responsible for the development, integration, and calibration of new automated transmission products utilized around the globe. In this position, you will be challenged to utilize a variety of analytical and hands on engineering skills to develop new products. More than just a desk job, you’ll get to work in several different environments including test cells and offsite test facilities as well as engineering and customer vehicles at our Proving Grounds and on the road.

Experience Required:

Class A commercial driver’s license or ability to obtain one.

+

Knowledge of CAN based vehicle communication networks (J1939). Experience with CAN based Vector tools such as CANape and CANalyzer desired.

Demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making in either an academic or professional setting

Primary responsibilities include:

The Vehicle Systems Engineering position will be part of a team that is critical in bringing new automated transmission products from concept to production as part of a larger cross functional project team. As a member of this team you will be involved early in the product life cycle by working with other groups to help to take the voice of the customer and translated it into specific technical requirements. Throughout the product development cycle, you will be critical in insuring those requirements are met by working to support the creation, validation, and integration of prototype hardware. You will also work to insure that performance goals can be met by creating initial calibrations and software features for various vehicles and applications. Validating actual vehicle performance on the test track and engineering test trips will be a key function of this position to prepare the new product for field testing in customer trucks.

Interactively work with other engineering groups such as requirements, controls/software, mechanical hardware, and mechatronics to define, develop, and insure the functionality of new automated transmission products.

Integrate and validate prototype and new production transmissions in engineering test cells and engineering/customer test vehicles.

+

Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve any issues that come up during retrofit/installation or testing with new products.

+

Develop and validate new product features and create the calibration definitions necessary to optimize performance and efficiency in conjunction with the software/controls group

Analyze vehicle data using CAN based software tools

+

Support vehicle level engineering test trips and field testing in customer trucks

+

Manage and release global transmission calibration sets based on OEM, engine, and product application

+

Support a cross functional product development team as part of a Phase-Gate new product development process

+

Communicating technical detail to a vast audience including other engineering functions, project managers, sales/marketing, customers, and other potentially non-technical people

+

Investigates product problems, understands causal mechanisms, recommends appropriate action, owns problem resolution and documents results with guidance from more experienced team members.

Provides independent execution of established work processes and systems, while still developing technology or product knowledge; engages with the improvement of systems and processes.

Involves minimal direct management of people, but could involve the coordination and direction of work amongst technicians and/or temporary student employees.

Contributes effectively toward team goals, exhibits influence within a work group and continues to develop proficiency in the competency areas critical to success in the role.

Qualifications

Skills and Experience:

Systems Thinking - Defines the system of interest by drawing the boundaries, identifying its context within its environment, its interfaces, and that it has a lifecycle to aid in planning the problem statement, scope and deliverables ; analyzes linkages and interactions between elements that comprise the system of interest by using appropriate methods, models and integration of outcomes to understand the system, predict its behavior and devise modifications to it in order to produce the desired effects.

System Requirements Engineering - Uses appropriate methods and tools to translate stakeholder needs into verifiable requirements to which designs are developed; establishes acceptance criteria for the system of interest through analysis, allocation and negotiation; tracks the status of requirements throughout the system lifecycle; assesses the impact of changes to system requirements on project scope, schedule, and resources; creates and maintains information linkages to related artifacts.

System Capability Engineering - Identifies system capability and risks through analysis or experimental testing of the system, sub-system, or super system in the context of its environment; negotiates and verifies requirements against capability to guide project scope and system development accordingly; assesses legacy system versus proposed new system solution capabilities and makes decisions as to how best to achieve system capability with consideration of stakeholder trade-offs.

Product Interface Management and Integration - Identifies and analyzes the interfaces and interactions across system boundaries by specifying the requirements and limits to ensure that the product meets requirements; controls the interactions across the system element boundaries by making sure that they remain within specified limits; integrates system elements by creating an integration plan, including identification of method and timing for each activity to make it easier to find, isolate, diagnose, and correct.

Product Problem Solving - Solves product problems using a process that protects the customer; determines the assignable cause; implements robust, data-based solutions; and identifies the systemic root causes and recommended actions to prevent problem reoccurrence.

Cross-Functional Design Integration - Translates the value package requirements that include the voices of many stakeholders into virtual designs, and communicates the capability of the design through an approved cross-functional design review.

Product Failure Mode Avoidance - Mitigates potential product failure modes, by identifying interfaces, functions, functional requirements, interactions, control factors, noise factors, and prioritized potential failure modes and potential failure causes for the system of interest to effectively and efficiently improve the reliability of Cummins’ products.

Required Education, Licenses or Certifications

College, university, or equivalent degree in Engineering required.
