We are looking for a Senior Counsel who specializes in Labor and Employment law to join our Corporate Legal team based in Indiana.

The Cummins Legal function provides the full range of legal services supporting Cummins Inc. and its consolidated businesses. Our primary office in the United States is in Indianapolis, IN. We also have international offices in Australia, Brazil, China, India, Mexico, South and West Africa, and the United Kingdom through which we support Cummins operations in more than 190 countries.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Informal or formal coaching, and/or supervision of one or more attorneys, paralegals or consultants

  • Assisting with hiring, developing and retaining talent within the Legal function

  • Leading labor and employment support for multiple businesses, functions, and organizations across geographies

  • Exercising independent judgment in managing matters and projects

  • Managing internal and external business relationships and expectations with limited supervision

  • Providing legal and practical advice to mid- to high-level business and function leaders, government relations/public policy staff, and other members of management

  • Influencing and contributing to the overall objectives and organizational goals

  • Developing and administering Legal function projects and processes

  • Assessing need and developing and delivering compliance policies, guidance and training

  • Representing Cummins as needed in meetings with regulatory agencies

  • Supporting responses to government investigations, rulemaking comments, and other submissions to government agencies as needed

  • Working collaboratively with business and function leaders to defend investigations, enforcement actions, and other contentious matters

  • Using understanding of the business environment to set compliance priorities and recommend options to mitigate risk

Qualifications

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

  • Degree in law and license to practice law in any US state

  • 10 years experience in the labor and employment specialty area

  • At least 5 years responsibility for advising and counseling on traditional labor law issues

  • If currently in an external counsel role, at least 5 years directly interacting with in-house legal counsel and business stakeholders is required

  • If currently in an in-house counsel role, at least 5 years directly managing and interacting with external legal counsel is required

  • Experience advising on employment and labor aspects of commercial transaction is preferred

  • Three or more years of service as an in-house lawyer, investigator, or field agent with the EEOC, NLRB or another regulatory agency is not required but considered a plus

Compensation and Benefits

Base salary rate commensurate with experience.
