Cummins Inc. Placement - Electrical Engineer in Milton Keynes, United Kingdom

Placement - Electrical Engineer

The successful candidate will work within the Electrified Power Business Unit at the Milton Keynes Battery Technical Centre. The role provides opportunity to participate within teams of engineers and technicians supporting research and development into Li-ion cell battery technology. This opportunity applies knowledge of engineering principles and design practices to create design requirements and translating them into design specifications, applying electrical knowledge, design concepts, algorithms and design specifications considering application and performance.

This role effectively communicates the capability of a design concept to meet cross-functional requirements including assessment of alternative and competitive design concepts, and works effectively across cross-functional disciplines to develop corporate and customer requirements including those required to resolve product issues.

The student will apply and support the execution of processes such as Critical Design Decisions, System Design and Validation Consideration Checklist, Design Review, and tools such as iDFMEA, Altium, LTSpice, required to enable high quality component and subsystem-level design decision making and design refinement.

The student will obtain input and negotiate with cross-functional and cross-discipline technical experts and senior-level designers to communicate the component and subsystem design intent through a thorough Design Review package to the Product Preceding Technology, (PPT), Value Package Introduction (VPI), or Value Package Change Request (VPCR) teams requiring holistic assessments of various design concepts.

The role also allows for problem resolution of moderately complex components, products, systems, subsystems or services with a greater degree of technical complexity and ambiguity with greater accountability to the project team. It will require independent execution of established work processes and systems, while still developing technology or product knowledge.

We are looking for a student with an interest in electrification and Li-ion batteries. Studying for a technical degree in any of the following fields:

  • Software Engineering

  • Design Engineering

  • Electrical/Mechanical Engineering

  • Systems Engineering

Other Science / Engineering Degrees are also considered.

During the placement a mentor will be provided and they will provide regular coaching throughout the 12 months. The role will also work closely with other engineers. Safe working and protocol familiarisation training will be provided. Access to, and training in, the use of industry standard tools for analysing and elaborating test data will also be given.

At Cummins, we are dedicated to diversity in the workplace and we are committed to a policy of treating all our employees and job applicants equally. No employee or potential employee will receive less favourable treatment because of any protected characteristic.
