Packing-Logistics Programming Engineer


Experienced Packaging Engineer who provides work leadership and training to entry level Packaging Engineers. Designs and develops environmentally sustainable packaging solutions for the safe shipping of products. Optimizes packaging performance with attention to customer requirements, operations integration and safety, part specifications, packaging materials, vendor relations, and other functional requirements. Provides technical expertise for Value Package Introduction (VPI) and current product programs.

Applies specialized knowledge of engineering principles and practices across various areas and projects in the design, analysis and release of packaging and container systems through the product life cycle

Works cross-functionally and with customers and suppliers to specify design requirements for expendable and returnable packaging and containers for new finished products and raw material components

Works cross-functionally and with customers and suppliers to identify and deliver improvements to packaging, quality, total cost, and waste, in line with organizational goals

Defines returnable container fleet size through cross-functional collaboration, considering logistics and inventory stocking level inputs

Develops site-specific packaging requirements aligned with Cummins Global Packaging Standards, safety, storage racking, line side presentation needs, and equipment

Works cross-functionally to ensure supplier conformance to packaging standards

and other regulatory requirements for inbound and outbound shipments

Supports Indirect Purchasing in packaging procurement initiatives

Drives consistent results by applying business acumen in decision making and cost-based analysis

Actively seeks new ways to grow and be challenged using both formal and informal development channels



Returnable Packaging Management - Gathers and analyzes financial data, fleet sizing, tracking, maintenance, logistics and performance monitoring requirements to develop a returnable packaging program that delivers savings in material and transportation while reducing waste.

Problem Solving - Solves problems using a systematic analysis process by leveraging industry standard methodologies to create problem traceability and protect the customer; determines the assignable cause; implements robust, data-based solutions; identifies the systemic root causes and recommended actions to prevent problem reoccurrence.

Packaging Testing - Evaluates performance validation tests, standards and reports to distinguish which method to apply; interprets test reports and draws conclusions in order to ensure packaging performance meets transit and handling conditions through end to end supply chain.

Packaging Material Knowledge - Demonstrates the benefits of using different packaging mediums by articulating their physical properties, types and characteristics to select the packaging materials for the application, product protection, cost and impact on the environment.

Packaging Distribution Conditions and Dynamics - Recognizes environmental conditions and dynamic forces placed on packaging in supply chains by explaining the hazards and corresponding requirements that ensure product protection.

Operations Integration in Industrial Packaging - Demonstrates and applies knowledge of manufacturing process, equipment and the physical flows of inbound parts to finished goods to establish industrial packaging methods and equipment that integrate safely and efficiently into the operational environment.

Manages complexity - Making sense of complex, high quantity, and sometimes contradictory information to effectively solve problems.

Industrial Packaging Design - Develops primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging designs for industrial products through the application of engineering techniques to ensure product protection for all touch points of an end to end supply chain.

Environmentally Sustainable Packaging Principles - Outlines the environmentally sustainable packaging material selection and its life cycle impact by describing selection criteria, performance considerations and application in designing order to achieve the goal to reduce, reuse, recycle or reclaim.

Ensures accountability - Holding self and others accountable to meet commitments.

Data Analytics - Interprets information relying on knowledge of business or functional frameworks, and leverages analytical problem-solving tools to draw conclusions and communicate meaningful patterns that drive business insights; assesses quality of data as an initial step of the analysis.

Action oriented - Taking on new opportunities and tough challenges with a sense of urgency, high energy, and enthusiasm.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

Bachelor degree in Engineering or related discipline is required. Packaging Engineering or Packaging Science degree is highly preferred.

This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.


3-5 years of Packaging Engineering or related experience is required
